Adrain and Ron: From an Unexpected Movie Connection to Building a Loving Family Through Adoption From Foster Care

Adrain and Ron’s love story began unexpectedly during a shared moment at the movies. Both had gone to see Dragon Ball Z: Broly on their own but ended up meeting, sparking a connection that would lead to a beautiful family life together. Now, five years into their relationship and nearly three years married, they’re not only partners in life, but also proud fathers to their son, Jamal.

Living in Houston, Texas, Adrain works as an 8th-grade teacher, and Ron manages a busy career in restaurant management. They’ve built a life grounded in love, perseverance, and shared commitment to each other and their growing family.

Their journey to fatherhood wasn’t always something Adrain had imagined for himself. While Ron had always known he wanted to be a dad, Adrain initially had other plans. However, everything changed when Adrain saw his best friend raising his godson. The joy and fulfillment he saw in family life stirred something within him, and he realized he, too, was meant to be a father. It was one of the best decisions he’s ever made.

The couple’s path to parenthood wasn’t without challenges. They chose to adopt through DePelchin Children’s Center, a decision that opened their hearts and home to Jamal, who came to them at four years old. When they first welcomed Jamal, he had significant developmental delays. He couldn’t speak, was not yet potty trained, struggled with basic motor skills like using utensils, and had frequent violent outbursts. Adrain and Ron knew they had a lot of work ahead, but they also knew that Jamal belonged with them.

With patience, dedication, and a lot of love, Adrain and Ron have helped Jamal blossom into the child he is today. His progress has been nothing short of remarkable. From a nonverbal toddler with significant developmental needs, Jamal has grown into a happy young boy. One of the proudest moments for Adrain and Ron was seeing Jamal receive the principal’s award for being a leader in his class, a testament to how far he’s come with their support.

Of course, balancing the demands of fatherhood has been an ongoing challenge for Adrain and Ron. Jamal’s schedule includes various therapies, and Ron’s ever-changing work hours sometimes make coordinating everything difficult. But over time, they’ve found their rhythm as a family. Adrain jokes that after two years, he’s finally getting the hang of it. Despite the daily challenges, they wouldn’t trade their journey for anything.

Their road to parenthood even faced emotional hurdles, especially when Jamal’s biological father resurfaced two months into their adoption process, expressing interest in reclaiming his parental rights. The situation brought uncertainty and concern, but after several difficult Zoom calls, Jamal’s biological father came to understand that Adrain and Ron were Jamal’s true home. He ultimately decided to terminate his parental rights, allowing Adrain and Ron to continue raising Jamal without further disruption.

For Adrain and Ron, the love they receive from their son is the greatest reward they could ever ask for. Reflecting on their journey, Adrain offers this advice to other gay men considering adoption: “It’s scary, long, and very hard, but I would do it all again because the love I get from my son is the greatest thing I have ever received.”

Through their ups and downs, Adrain and Ron have built a family rooted in resilience, love, and a deep sense of purpose. Their story is a reminder that the path to parenthood, while not always easy, is full of life-changing rewards for those willing to take the leap.
