The Increasing Costs of Surrogacy for Gay Men – And How GWK Academy Can Help

As more gay men and queer individuals  aspire to become biological fathers, the challenges they face have also intensified. The journey to parenthood through surrogacy and IVF alone can often exceed $200,000.  Several factors have driven this increase over the past five years, including rising surrogate compensation, higher medical and legal fees, and the cost of comprehensive insurance coverage. Here are some of the key drivers behind these escalating costs.

Surrogate Compensation: Surrogate compensation has increased, reflecting the higher demand for surrogates and general inflation. Compensation for surrogates can range from $40,000 to $70,000 (but typically around $50,000) depending on various factors such as the surrogate’s experience and their location in the United States. For example, if they are an experienced surrogate, their compensation will be higher; if they live in a more expensive part of the country (i.e. the east and west coasts), their living costs will be more.

Medical Expenses: The cost of IVF procedures, including egg retrieval and embryo transfer, has also risen. Additionally, the medical screening and care for the surrogate, which includes routine check-ups, fertility treatments, and prenatal care, have become more expensive.

Legal Fees: Legal costs associated with drafting surrogacy agreements, establishing parentage, and ensuring both intended parents are recognized legally have increased. Legal fees can add another $10,000 to $15,000 to the overall cost.

Insurance Costs: Insurance for surrogacy, which covers the surrogate’s pregnancy and any potential complications, has become a significant expense. Intended parents often need to purchase supplemental insurance policies, which can cost between $10,000 and $25,000.

Agency Fees: Fees for surrogacy agencies, which provide services such as matching intended parents with surrogates, coordination of medical and legal processes, and support throughout the journey, have also increased. Agency fees can range from $25,000 to $50,000 and sometimes  more.
